Residents in Peterborough have created a series of ‘friendly benches’ to help tackle social isolation in their area.

Wanting to make better use of a number of benches in a row in their local park, community group Better Bretton have started a scheme to help combat loneliness and offer a listening ear.

By designating them ‘friendly benches’ the group hope Bretton residents will drop by for a chat if they need someone to talk to.

Every Monday, weather permitting, from 10:30am someone from the group will be there for a chat.

The benches are located in Bretton Park near the Watergall School in Peterborough.

The plan has been dubbed a ‘fantastic idea’ by residents and Kathy Shaw from Better Bretton hopes more people will come forward to volunteer as a listening ear.

Kathy said: “The idea was thought up by residents in response to the easing out of lockdown.

“It is especially aimed at older people who need to find a bit of confidence in walking through public spaces and want a friendly chat as we know people have not been able to do their usual weekly activities.

“Hopefully people will come along and have a chat with Better Bretton volunteers and a bit of exercise at the same time.”
