The group which runs Bretton Medical Practice, Hodgson Medical Centre in Werrington, Jenner Healthcare in Whittlesey, Nene Valley Medical Practice in Orton Goldhay, Park Medical Centre, Thomas Walker Surgery in Princes Street, Thorney and Eye Medical Practice and Westgate Surgery began contacting patients this week.

Patients over the age of 80 will be offered the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine, which can be stored at a much lower temperature than its Pfizer/BioNTech counterpart. Both have been shown to be safe and offer a high level of protection though.

The Pfizer vaccine will continue to be given at Peterborough City Hospital’s vaccine hub and by the end of last week, 6000 vaccines had been administered at the hub.

Octagon has also confirmed that it will be offering the opportunity for people to volunteer to assist the vaccination programme in the near future.

A statement on the Octagon Medical Practice said: “Octagon will be starting to offer Covid-19 vaccinations to our patients in the priority groups starting with those patients over 80 yrs in the coming days.

“Eligible patients will be contacted directly by our staff to arrange an appointment. If you have a valid mobile phone listed to your medical record you will receive a text message to book this yourself.

“Please don’t contact your practice to request a vaccine as we will contact every patient in the over 80s cohort (or their registered carer) and this may take a few days. There are enough vaccines for every patient over 80 on our patient list so please do not worry, we will ensure that we can support every patient.

“If you are under 80 you will not be included in this cohort, with further cohorts being confirmed by NHS England and not Octagon Medical Practice. Please do not call us to request a vaccination or date if you are not within the over 80s cohort as we will not have any information to give to you.

“As soon as more vaccines become available, they will be offered to other people at risk as soon as possible.

“Please continue to abide by all the social distancing, wearing of face masks and hand hygiene guidance, which will still save lives.

“At this stage, please do not contact your practice regarding a COVID vaccination as we will be contacting you or your nominated carer.

“Opportunities for members of the public to volunteer at sites to support the vaccination programme will be available very soon, so please keep an eye on our social media and the Octagon website for further information.”
