As police roam the city to make sure people are staying at least two metres apart from each other, Queensgate took a novel approach to getting the social distancing message out - by adding it to its car park signs.

Instead of the signs telling motorists how many spaces there are in the blue, red, green and yellow car parks, the words now read: "Stay," "safe," "two" and "meters.”

Revealing the message on Facebook, Queensgate wrote: "You may have noticed some important messages have been added to our car park signs over the weekend..."

The shopping centre is already doing its bit to help key workers during the crisis by offering them free parking in the Blue car park.

Among those to benefit include NHS staff, carers, teachers, supermarket workers and all emergency service personnel.

The Blue (Cavell) car park will offer this service until further notice. Key workers must register by emailing their name and car registration to [email protected] and, once validated, they can use the car park to assist in their essential travel.

The centre is currently closed, but the M&S food hall is remaining open seven days a week, including exclusively for NHS and blue light staff on Tuesdays and Fridays from 8am to 9am, as well as for vulnerable people and the elderly on Mondays and Thursdays from 8am to 9am.

As well as M&S, the centre’s Boots store is also open seven days a week, and the When Polly Met Fergie restaurant is trading for takeaway delivery through UberEats, JustEat and online.

Access to Boots is via the Long Causeway entrance and access to M&S is via the centre’s Queen Street doors.
