Images of the dumped masks were sent to the Peterborough Telegraph after being spotted by a dog walker.

The multiple disposable masks were found just metres from a bin on the Embankment near the Key Theatre and city councillor Mohammed Jamil said the council will prosecute anyone caught discarding facemasks.

Litter and fly-tipping has become an increasing problem in some areas of the city since lockdown, with other beauty spots, such as Nene Park being hit particularly hard.

Central Ward Councillor Mohammed Jamil said: “I have been made aware of the problem of used masks on the Embankment and the routes out of the city centre.

“It is extremely disappointing that people are throwing away these masks when they are leaving the city centre.

“It is not very hygienic and it is an eyesore. These masks can carry germs and people need to think twice before discarding them.

“It is not acceptable, and I would ask people to think before they dump these masks.

“The council will collect the rubbish and we will prosecute if we catch people throwing these masks.”

The PT reader who took the images told us: “While walking my dog on the Embankment this morning, the grass was littered with about 20 used face masks. As you can see from the pictures the litter bin was about 10ft away.

“I don’t think this would be in the category of picture of the week, but disgusting picture of the week!”
