Having already exhausted its Christmas donations, stock levels are running very low in some items like tinned tomatoes. The food bank has already seen an “increased need” in those across the city needing food urgently.

Juliet Welch, community action manager for the food bank, understands the limitations of supermarkets to stop panic buying, but this could have a detrimental effect on its service.

She said: “I know some supermarkets are putting restrictions in place as to how many items a person can buy, so people cannot buy more than four tins of tomatoes, but we need a lot more than that. We are worried if people cannot buy items for us as we are also concerned we may see more families in need of food whose work has stopped.”

Already the food bank is seeing clients attending who are suffering because of the virus. Juliet said: “We are seeing clients coming in who are on zero hour contracts with no work. As their factories and warehouses here are shut down as no goods are coming in from abroad due to the virus, so they have no money and no food.”

The food bank is determined to do all it can to provide food provision to those in need.
