Archaeologists set for dig at Stamford Hospital

The dig is a necessary part of the process in submitting an application to the local authority for full planning permission to develop the hospital site in the future.

The archaeological team is expected to begin work on the hospital site on Monday and it is anticipated that the dig could take up to two weeks to complete.

Stamford Hospital redevelopment project director Polly Grimmett said: “The dig will involve creating 100 metres of trenching, some of which will be in the car park that serves John Van Geest Ward.

“We expect to lose up to 18 car parking spaces in this area while the archaeologists are on site. We hope patients and visitors will bear with us while this work takes place.

“We will do our best to ensure disruption is kept to a minimum.”

Following the dig, the Archaeological Unit team will write a report for the planning authority to consider along with the trust’s application to demolish Hurst Ward and create a procedure room facility on the hospital site.

This is in line with the trust’s clinical strategy, which is centred upon treating more patients at Stamford Hospital in the future.
