The mini Spielbergs produced more than 50 entries in seven categories, with pupils from 14 schools teaming up to produce three-minute clips.

Peterborough City Council leader Councillor John Holdich said the awards at the KingsGate Conference Centre are one of the highlights of his calendar.

“It’s fantastic to see the kids when they are winning, it’s their Oscars,” said the council leader, who was judging the Years 3 and 4 category.

“Apart from the educational value the quality gets better every year. It’s been going 11 years and I’ve been to every one. I always take my good lady with me and she enjoys it as well. You come out with a lump in your throat.”

The nominated clips are played out during the evening, and the winning entrants receive a trophy, while the runners-up get a medal.

This year entrants were given free rein on their subject area within the broad themes of musical theatre, bullying awareness and ‘what you are doing in the classroom’.

The films are judged in age group categories - early years, Years 1 and 2, Years 3 and 4, Years 5 and 6 - with awards for the best entries in each category and additional awards for best soundtrack, a special bullying awareness award and the Warwick Davis award which is given to the best overall film.

Sponsored by the council, the awards are supported by the Peterborough Safeguarding Children Board. The judging panel is made up of representatives from the BBC, British Film Society, the council and the Peterborough Safeguarding Children Board.

Entrants this year included films about bullying and even one on the history of the Suffragettes.

And despite the rain, which prevented the red carpet from being rolled out, Cllr Holdich, who is also the council’s cabinet member for education, said it was brilliant to see the children dressed up and enjoying themselves.

“It’s a great evening for the kids, a great evening for the teachers and those presenting,” he added.
