More city pupils enjoy reading

More pupils in Peterborough enjoy reading than at this time last year, according to the National Literacy Trust.

The trust has its own ‘hub’ in the city which had completed its first year of activities to provide literacy support.

In a survey of children aged eight to 11 from eight city schools, the trust found that the number who enjoy reading has increased by 23.4 per cent from 2014 to 2015.

The number of pupils who read daily outside lessons has also risen, increasing from 29.4 per cent in 2014 to 43.7 per cent in 2015.

And more Peterborough pupils were said to enjoy reading compared to their peers in the East of England.

Sally Atkinson, the National Literacy Trust’s Peterborough Hub manager, said: “We are delighted to see evidence of children’s improved enjoyment and attitudes towards literacy.”
