Cambridge Meridian Academies Trust (CMAT) – which runs West Town Primay Academy and Nene Park Academy along with other schools across Cambridgeshire, Lincolnshire and Northamptonshire - is looking to recruit for apprenticeship vacancies as schools respond to increased demand for technology.

Jonathan Emery, Assistant IT Director for CMAT, said: “Our team is growing so fast in part due to the demand on our schools with the impact of Covid-19 and the need for pupils to be taught at home as well as in the classroom.

“This is a fascinating time for schools and technology as so much as changed in 2020. Staff and students are learning new skills all the time and we are here to guide and support them.

“We are privileged to have a talented IT team here with some of our colleagues being former students of CMAT schools. Some started in an apprenticeship role and have gone on to be promoted internally within the Trust.

“We are also proud of the diversity within our IT Team with three female employees – which is unusual for IT teams - who are all excelling in their roles, which resonates with our commitment to supporting Women in STEM.

“We want to hear from people who may be looking for a career changes or want to take their first step on the career ladder to get in touch with us if they feel a career in IT is one for them.”

Michaela Choat is an Apprentice IT Technician who joined CMAT in April 2019. Prior to this, Michaela worked in hospitality and retail.

Michaela said: “My previous roles weren’t taking me anywhere career wise and CMAT opened the door to pursue a new career in a working environment, while gaining qualifications.

“I would encourage anyone to work in IT as there are many positives. I enjoy the fact that no day is the same and working hours are very flexible. It’s a very stable career with lots of opportunity to progress and even specialise in. The possibilities are endless.”

Attributes that put candidates in a good position for the role include good communication, people skills and project management.

Adam Brown joined CMAT in 2017 as an IT apprentice at Sawtry Village Academy, where he also went to school. He has now progressed to the role of Education Services IT Support Technician.

Adam said: “When I left school I didn’t really think the university life was for me, nor did I want to spend three more years in higher education. I was offered the apprenticeship at Sawtry Village Academy and haven’t looked back.

“A huge amount of my job involves customer service and I really enjoy meeting new people at all of the schools I go into. I also really enjoy the satisfaction of completing challenging tasks or making a teacher’s life a little bit easier.

“I think apprenticeships in general have become really good. I’ve been really well supported in learning new IT skills and been given the opportunity to help with big exciting projects across the company.”
