Councillors launched the appeal following a campaign to provide school meals, during which “conversations revealed that many families did not own a single book,” according to group leader Cllr Shaz Nawaz, who added: “Too many children also faced not having anything to open on Christmas Day.”

Following the appeal the Labour group handed over more than 1,400 brand new books to around 20 schools thanks to support from local businesses, residents and councillors.

Cllr Nawaz added: “One ward resident in Dogsthorpe donated 90 selection boxes and others wrapped gifts so children have something to open on Christmas Day.

“The response from all the schools in the city was truly amazing. I saw teachers literally in tears when they saw the quality and quantity of books and gifts donated.

Schools were already providing hampers to some of the most deprived families and we worked with them to make sure that, as far as possible, no child or family fell through the cracks of our very uneven benefits system.

“On behalf of the Labour group I want to take the opportunity to thank everyone who has helped us during this difficult year. I wish the people of Peterborough a very Merry Christmas although I appreciate it won’t be the same this year.”
