City Cabs Peterborough, based in Bourges Boulevard, has started to install plastic screens in all its cars to separate the driver and passengers.

Owner Asgar Ali said: “The screens have been fitted in two cars so far but we plan to have the entire fleet of 70 vehicles fitted out.”

It is quite an investment of £200 to £300 per car.

“Our cars are also equipped now with hand gel and cleansing wipes and the drivers have masks. We want passengers to feel safe and secure with us. After each journey, the cab is wiped down.

He added: “There has been a dramatic drop in passengers since the start of the lockdown.”

“Numbers have picked up since but it nowhere near back to where we were.”

The work to fit the screens in the cars is being carried out by Peterborough-based kitchen manufactures PKB Trade.
