M&S looking for new store location in Stamford as part of major expansion - but no new Peterborough store on the horizon

The loss of M&S in Queensgate last year was seen as a real hammer blow for the city centre – but now the retail giant is looking expand again.

However, despite listing around 500 locations they are looking to either open new stores or expand their offering, Peterborough is not listed – meaning only the large Brotherhood store, and the food outlet at Serpentine Green will remain.

But there is some good news for local shoppers – as Stamford is listed as a location M&S are looking to improve their offering.

Stamford town centre currently has a small M&S.

M&S has launched its search “following the excellent performance of the new M&S Food stores opened in the last three years”.

More than 20 stores are already due to open or be modernised before the end of the current financial year and are expected to create around 800 jobs.

Alex Freudmann, the managing director M&S Food, said: “The strong performance of our new M&S food stores gives us the confidence to explore even more locations across the UK, from Elgin to Exmouth.

"With more than 20 stores opening or modernised before the end of the financial year, we are moving faster.

"Our team want new sites where we could open a large M&S Food store as we deliver on our strategy to bring the right stores to the right places and offer the best shopping experience, range and availability for our customers.”

The Queensgate M&S store closed in April 24, after more than 60 years of trading in the city centre.

The retailer opened its first store in Peterborough’s Bridge Street on March 6, 1964 when it moved on to the old City Cinema site.

However, there has been good news recently, with the opening of stores such as Frasers, HMV and MINISO in Queensgate all taking place in the last few weeks.
