Business leader raps politicians as Cambridgeshire bosses stay focused and send exports soaring

Exports from firms in Cambridgeshire doubled last month compared to the previous year.

A business leader has praised the focus of company bosses as exports from Cambridgeshire soared last month.

County firms exported goods worth a total of £47 million last month - double the amount a year ago and despite uncertainty caused during the run-up to the referendum and after the shock Brexit vote.

John Bridge, chief executive of Cambridgeshire Chambers of Commerce, said: “In spite of the nonsense currently emanating from the country’s politicians it’s clear that at least the business community is maintaining its focus on creating the wealth necessary to secure our country’s future success.

“It is essential that businesses stay positive and focused on creating the certainty in their minds that they can continue to perform.

“The one thing we can be certain of currently is that attitude is fundamental to future wealth creation.”

The chamber says much of the increase has come from exports to China.

About £19 million of the £47 million total was destined for China, up £18.2 million on the same time last year.

This was due to four separate shipments valued at between £2.1 million and £5.7 million each.

Last month exports to Turkey were worth £8.5 million and to Egypt were worth £5.4 million.

Mr Bridge said: “This extraordinary increase in export activity is excellent news for the local economy and will, we hope, inspire others to continue to press into new markets and not demonstrate reluctance to exploit business opportunities overseas.”
