‘I Found 101 Ways to Reduce Plastic, You can too’ is out now and charts local writer Kim Grove’s quest to remove or reduce as much plastic from around her home and work as possible.

The spur for this journey was the BBC programme Blue Planet II with David Attenborough, who said in the programme, “The oceans are under threat now as never before in human history.”

Various reports suggest that by 2050 there will be more plastic in the sea than fish. Plastic bags are now found in the deepest trenches of the ocean. Seabirds, fish and mammals are dying from the endless amounts of plastic in their stomachs as they mistake this for food.

“Plastic also dominates our supermarket shelves and fast food outlets in large quantities, some of which ends its life in our hedgerows, once again affecting the wildlife that call this home.”

Having been a writer for many years and currently studying for a degree in Environmental Science, the author decided to share her experiences with others who are also looking for ways to reduce their impact on the planet.

She says: “In this book, I offer tried and tested tips and ideas on how to reduce plastic and I hope this will inspire others to make simple changes to reduce their own plastic waste.”

Kim admits that plastic does have its place, as long as it can be used many times over. But she said it seems that a lot of plastic is not necessary.

“I wanted to find ways that I could reduce the amount of single-use plastic I bought. I Found 101 Ways to Reduce Plastic You can too, shows the simple changes I made around the home to do away with as much plastic as possible. I still think I could do much more.

“There are over 66 million people in the UK. If each person made just one or two of these changes, we’d have 120 million fewer pieces of plastic floating about in the air, clogging up roadside verges, or entangling turtles in the sea.

“Why not give it a go?”

Kim has been a writer for many years, having been published in many formats and platforms.

She has been interested in the environment for about 20 years, which was when she started to buy organic food after becoming interested in the way it was grown.

This interest, however became more extensive after watching An Inconvenient Truth, the documentary made by Al Gore about the environment. This prompted Kim to start an Environmental Science Degree with the Open University where she is learning much more about the impact people are having on the planet.

She has tried to find ways to reduce her own carbon footprint and live in a way that is more sustainable.

Her plastics book is expected to be closely followed by another on becoming more environmentally sustainable.
