The anniversary celebrations were enriched by the presence of former pupils, who were invited back to share memories of their own school days. Their stories provided a fascinating insight into how life at Wittering Primary has changed over the decades, while also highlighting the traditions and values that have endured across generations.

To add to the sense of occasion, staff and pupils arrived at school ‘Dressed Through the Ages’. From Victorian-style outfits to more modern fashions, the result was a wonderfully eclectic mix of clothing and hairstyles that brought history vividly to life around the school grounds.

Throughout the day, pupils explored original school log books dating back to 1876. They examined entries describing lessons, daily routines and significant events, prompting thoughtful discussion about how education has evolved over the last century and a half. Children reflected on which features of the past they would like to bring back, while also recognising and appreciating the aspects of school life they enjoy most today.

The school was also delighted to welcome Reverend Gary and the Station Commander, who addressed pupils during a special assembly alongside Mrs Blake, the Headteacher, and former pupils. Their thoughtful contributions added further depth to the celebrations and highlighted the strong and enduring links between the school, the village and the wider community.

Charlotte Blake, Headteacher of Wittering Primary, said: “Celebrating 150 years of our school is a truly special moment for our whole community. Generations of pupils, staff and families have passed through these doors, each leaving their mark and helping shape the school we are today.

“While we are proud of our history, we are equally as excited about the future, continuing to provide an inspiring and nurturing learning environment.”

The celebrations concluded with a whole-school party lunch, providing the perfect opportunity for pupils, staff and visitors to share stories and mark this remarkable anniversary together.

Cathy Carlisle, Chief Executive Officer of Soke Education Trust, said: “As a trust, we are proud to be part of this continuing story, honouring the past and working together to ensure a strong and successful future for every child.”

The event served not only as a celebration of Wittering Primary School’s rich history, but also as a reminder of its continuing role at the heart of the village community.
