Vet practice and charities team up to boost cat welfare in Peterborough

A Peterborough vet practice has teamed up with local charities to help improve cat welfare by encouraging more people to microchip, vaccinate and neuter their pets.

On 14th April, Nene Veterinary Group’s Peterborough branch is joining forces with Woodgreen Pets Charity and Cats Protection to run an event for cat owners who live in PE1, PE2, PE3 and PE4 postcodes.

Woodgreen’s mobile clinic will be at Nene Vets’ car park on Broadway between 10.30am and 2.30pm and owners can take their pets for a free health and wellbeing check - which must be pre-booked - and the opportunity to have the pets microchipped if they are older than 20 weeks. The cost for microchipping is £5, or it is free if owners purchase a Cats Protection voucher for reduced price neutering, which is £35.

In addition, Nene Vets is offering discounted primary cat vaccinations to owners who take up the neutering offer at this event. Nene Vets, which also has practices in Wisbech and March, is part of VetPartners, a veterinary group led by vets that has practices and animal healthcare businesses across the UK and Europe.

Robert Culen, Clinical Director of Nene Vets, said having cats microchipped, neutered and vaccinated is the best way to keep them happy and healthy.

Robert said: “It is very important to vaccinate cats against diseases that can make them unwell or prove life-threatening. We also highly recommend having your pet microchipped because it gives you the best chance of being reunited with your pet if the go missing or are involved in an accident. Microchipping has been compulsory for cats in England since 2024, but we still see a lot of pets that don’t have one.

“They are around the size of a grain of rice and carry a unique identification and they are safe and easy to implant. Unlike collars and ID tags, they don’t come off and don’t put your cat at risk of injury.”

Paiton Barker, community outreach officer at Woodgreen Pets Charity, said: “In the UK, one in four households have at least one cat, yet around 15% remain unneutered. With this in mind, Woodgreen is partnering with Cats Protection to make neutering as accessible as possible for cat owners in Peterborough.

"Cats can begin reproducing from as young as four months old, so it’s vital that owners have the opportunity and support to make responsible choices early. Neutering is not only about preventing unwanted litters - although managing the growing cat population is an important factor, it also plays a key role in improving cats’ health and welfare. Neutered cats are less likely to spread disease, become injured through fighting, or wander far from home in search of a mate, reducing their risk of accidents such as road traffic incidents."
