Local Elections 2026: Vote Green for a Better Peterborough
The Peterborough Green party has high hopes of doubling our number of councillors from five to 10 at the May 7th elections, writes Barry Warne.
While it may seem ambitious, the nationwide political trends are turning the Greens into a formidable force on the left. With our existing councillors having a great reputation for the hard work they put in within their communities, we believe this is an achievable goal. Why not aim high?

Should we increase our number of councillors we will have even more influence on the way the city is run. As the population of Peterborough continues to grow, we believe it's critical that when houses are built they are the right type of houses.
The term ‘affordable housing’ is quite a vague one, and you will often see houses valued at prices like £250,000 being described as affordable. Clearly this is a sum of money which many first time buyers couldn't possibly afford, and we'd like to see genuinely affordable housing being built, perhaps in the style of Hampton. Hampton is a development which has retained many of its Green aspects with many houses looking out over lakes or fields.
The government fairer funding review should soon see the city in a better place financially. We believe that the most important thing this additional funding should be spent on is the protection of statutory services such as adult social care, children's services and homelessness provision.
Things which have life changing impacts for residents should be protected at all costs and the Greens will battle hard for this.
We will continue to urge the council to follow through with projects which it has committed too. We pushed last year for the city council to run its own children's home and £2,000,000 was put into the budget towards it. However, we've seen very little progress being made. This scheme is a classic example of how investing money to run our own in house services can save money.
We believe protecting Peterboroughs’ Embankment is hugely important. It's a great site for festivals, fun fairs etc, and like Ferry Meadows attracts people from far and wide. For sure, more could be done with it. Maybe cafes or bars would add to the appeal, but Green spaces by rivers in city centres are not things that should be thrown away in the name of development.
Cambridgeshire Mayor Paul Bristow seems determined that the area should be given over to a community stadium which will become the new home ground for Posh. The community stadium seems a great idea, but not on the Embankment. Surely Paul can come up with a location which would not have such a detrimental effect for the people of Peterborough.
This scheme is something which the Peterborough Green party would oppose vehemently. The Embankment is a Green space which needs to be protected.
If you wish to be represented by a party which puts Peterborough first and approaches issues with plenty of common sense, please consider voting Green at the council elections.
