WATCH: The wonder of the largest dinosaur that ever walked the earth has arrived in Peterborough!

The opening of the majestic Titanosaur exhibition took place at Peterborough Cathedral on Monday night (April 13).

The event was a culmination of many weeks and months of excitement after it was announced that a full scale cast of the Patagotitan Mayorum- known as the Titanosaur- would be loaned to Peterborough Cathedral by the Natural History Museum.

The cast model towers over everyone in the building, measuring an impressive 37 metres long and six metres tall. In its day, which was 160 million years ago, the dinosaur was the largest that walked the earth and weighed in at 60 tonnes- the same as 12 adult African elephants.

The original fossil was discovered in 2010 in Argentina when a farmer spotted a bone emerging from the earth. Excavations uncovered around 280 bones from at least six individuals.

There were a number of speeches at the grand opening.

Peterborough Cathedral CEO Jack Pishhorn said: “This is a very special evening for our cathedral and city as well. Towering above us all is something impossible to ignore- the Titanosaur- the largest dinosaur to ever walk the earth. A creature defined by its sheer scale, presence and ability to stop people in their tracks and in many ways, it’s a very fitting simple for where we are as a cathedral. We too are thinking big.

“The cathedral has always excited me but what excites me most is what to come next. This place is not just a remarkable historical building, it is a living, breathing part of the city and we are absolutely determined to make sure it has a bold sustainable future.

Council Leader Shabina Qayyum said: “This is just something else. It is a privilege to have this exhibition here in our city. We undersell ourselves in Peterborough and exhibitions like this, gives a realisation of the potential that we have. The fact that the whole city has got behind this exhibition is something to be truly proud of.

The Mayor of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority Paul Bristow said: “This is the scale of the ambition that Peterborough has. When I walked in I was blown away by the scale of the Titanosaur and the magnificence and majestic building we have in the heart of our city. When I talk about Peterborough Cathedral, we rightly talk about the past but from now on, when I talk about the Cathedral, I am excited to talk about the ambition, the vision and the future. I am so pleased we have so many exciting plans for the future.

Peterborough Cathedral has also placed on record their thanks to all of the partners that have made the exhibition possible and supported its arrival. These include Titan Wealth Management, Peterborough City Council, Robert Wardle as well as Queensgate and the Business Improvement District, the Combined Authority and the Natural History Museum.

Titanosaur will be housed in Peterborough Cathedral until Sunday, May 31.

Tickets are priced at £6 and can be obtained on the door or in advance at https://peterborough-cathedral.org.uk/event/titanosaur.
