It is a vehicle for some of Queen’s greatest hits, and sticking to motoring parlance you can see this turbo-charged muscle car of a show until Saturday.
Individuality is forbidden and music is controlled by Globalsoft in the futuristic setting on iPlanet where rock n roll is more than a long distant memory.
Step forward loner Galileo Figaro, who hears things and speaks in song titles and lyrics that mean nothing to him (but has the audience chuckling throughout).
Of course, he wants to break free!
He meets fellow outcast Scaramouche and soon, on a mission to bring back rock n roll – whatever that is – they are Under Pressure. (You can see where this is going….)
Alistair Kerr and Luci Collins excel as our heroes here, two standout, sensational voices delivering iconic songs and in Collins’ case, tremendous comedic timing.
They come across Britney Spears and Oz (nicely played by Munachukwuso Anike and Jessica Carter) two Bohemians – an underground group of rebels based at the Heartbreak Hotel. Led by Buddy (Mark Harriss in fine form) they are yearning for the past (and with names to match).
They believe a dreamer will appear to bring down Globalsoft, led by Khashoggi, Andy Lingfield, playing an authoritarian figure but never far from the humour himself, and Killer Queen, Pippa Kingston all leather-clad with rock goddess hair and, it has to be said, a voice to match. Both have a real presence on stage.
But is Galileo the one to lead the Bohemians to the place of living rock? Well, we soon get to find out after a burst of “Ayo” with his fist in the air – and it is off to the ruins of Wembley Stadium, where you will be clapping your hands and stamping your feet to you know what!
PODS have once again put together a hugely talented cast, the Ga Ga Girls bring great energy to the stage, the choreography and costumes are eye-catching, the live band terrific and even the sparce set, enhanced by the LED screens, works a treat.
It is laugh out loud funny, the songs are nostalgic and iconic in equal measure, making it a must-see for Queen fans and anyone who fancies a musical trip down memory lane.
