Sawtry Carnival promises a fantastic afternoon of fun for all

A vibrant parade through the village will kickstart the Sawtry Village Carnival on Saturday, June 13, which promises a fantastic afternoon for local residents and families.

Taking place from 12pm to 5pm on the Village Academy playing fields, the carnival – which started in 2005 and attracts around 3,000 visitors – will include live entertainment throughout the day, a food court, sports activity area, bar and beer garden and a wide range of free family activities. The 40-plus stalls, including both community organisations and local businesses, will see many raising funds for causes such as Help for Heroes, Breast Cancer charities, Addenbrooke’s Hospital, the Royal British Legion, CARESCO, and more.

The day will begin with the parade featuring schools, nurseries, local children’s and adult groups, charities, and businesses.

The carnival is entirely self-funded and organised by a small volunteer committee. Funds raised are used to cover event costs and help secure the future of both the carnival and the Sawtry Christmas fayre. Any surplus funds donate back into the community – supporting groups such as the local Girl Guides, a football team, and a social group for older residents, among others.

Carnival chairman Julia Keightley said: “We are committed to accessibility and inclusion, and provide a number of free activities for children.

“We also continue the long-standing carnival tradition of a Carnival Court, made up of a Carnival Queen, Princesses, Rosebud and Prince. They will lead the parade in our themed float (Sawtry at Sea this year) and host visiting courts from across the region, including a special ‘Queen’s Tea’.”

“As Chair of the Carnival Committee, I’m incredibly proud to uphold such a valued local tradition. While it takes a great deal of work from both myself and the committee, it’s always worth it to see the community come together and enjoy such a special occasion.”
