Review: 9 To 5 The Musical is a real feel-good joyous show

The opening song – Dolly Parton’s iconic 9 To 5, naturally – is as instantly recognisably as they come and brings with it high expectations of what is to follow; in this case a thoroughly enjoyable and entertaining two hours of song, dance and comedy.

This new production of 9 To 5 The Musical opened at Peterborough’s New Theatre last night and runs until Saturday. It is a big step for the venue’s operator – Landmark Theatres – as it represents only their second in-house produced large-scale musical, which after this run goes on a 10-venue national tour.

Based on the opening night it is a real statement of intent for a company which, with National Portfolio funding from the Arts Council, has set its sights on becoming the largest producing organisation outside of London.

It is also a real feather in the cap for the Arts in Peterborough.

The show, for the uninitiated, follows the trials and tribulations of female office workers, in the 1980s, working under a chauvinistic boss – in this scenario Franklin Hart Jr played here to great effect by Tim Rogers who deservedly gets his comeuppance – and how!

Attractive Doralee is sexually harassed, Violet overlooked for promotion because she is a woman, and recently dumped new girl Judy is just looking for a fresh start.

The aforementioned trio are excellent, their performances growing as their characters come to the fore.

Karla Tracey really shines as good ol’ country girl Doralee, the subject of the boss’ advances; “Backwood Barbie” was a treat.

Jade Marvin gives a strong and convincing performance as senior supervisor Violet who excels with “One Of the Boys”.

As for Kayla Carter as Judy, who gets the upper hand on her ex, listen out for “Get Out and Stay Out”. Just WOW.

Special mention for Jessica Martin, office busybody Roz who has a crush on the misogynist boss. Her fantasy number “Heart To Hart” is a joy.

The ensemble, and the choreography, is superb, and the live band, nicely housed in the set, outstanding.

Laugh out loud at times, toe-tappingly good musically throughout, it is a real feel-good joyous show.
