There was a very welcome late Frost at Oundle who claimed a last-gasp win in National rugby union division
The bold approach paid off for Oundle Rugby Club as they clinched a 31-24 National 2 East win over Canterbury at Occupation Road on Saturday.
With the scores tied at 24-24, and the clock in injury time, Oundle were awarded a penalty which was within kicking range and would have put the home team three points in front. However, boldly, Oundle decided to kick to the corner and from the resulting lineout giant second row Kieran Frost drove over the line to touch down. Ben Young slotted the conversion and the final whistle was blown giving Oundle a hard fought victory which cemented fourth place in the table. It was a different story in the first half with Canterbury racing into a two-try lead before Oundle woke up and replied with two tries of their own, the first by Grant Snelling and the second by James Fear following a scintillating break from winger Rian Hamilton. Young added the conversions before Canterbury restored their lead with a penalty to create a 17-14 half time lead. Oundle started the second half strongly and tries from winger Tevita Va’enuku and a second for Snelling put the home side in front 24-17. However Canterbury hit back on 70 minutes with a try and conversion to level the scores before Frost grabbed the glory. Oundle are at home again next Saturday when bottom side Oxford Harlequins are the visitors (2pm kick off), The club will open the Johnny Reynolds Memorial Stand before the game. Reynolds was a gifted young athlete from Oundle who passed away aged 19 in 2023.
