ROWING: City stars deliver Master-ful displays

The event was one of two regattas staged at Nottingham over the weekend and Sunday’s showpiece over one kilometre proved more fruitful for Peterborough, perhaps as their home venue provides one kilometre side-by-side racing.

Months of training for the Women’s D Novice coxed four of Helen Moseley, Jo Burton, Emma Carling and Ann Casey paid off when Victoria Jayatilaka coxed them to a convincing win against Bedford’s Star club and a Tyne United crew.

Another win came in the Masters F coxless quads, where John Canton, Joe Smith, Owen Green and Neil Elder beat Stratford-upon-Avon by two lengths.

A trio of wins was completed by a composite crew containing Peterboough’s Hayley Marsters and Leicester’s Liz Pulford, Angela Holohan and Sally Horrocks in the Women’s Masters C/D coxless fours.

The Nottingham City regatta on Saturday saw almost 700 crews entering the two kilometre race at the National Water Sports Centre.

Peterborough’s best result came from Camilla Plumb racing in the Women’s Lightweight Elite single sculls.

Despite sculling at Senior status rather than Elite, Plumb managed to take second place early in the race and held it until the end. Home advantage counted though as Nottingham won the event.

Tim Halliday and Tom Dolby found themselves in a fiercely competitive IM2 doubles competition. Less than two seconds separated the field at the 500m mark. Although the first and last placed crews started to separate as the race continued, the remaining three boats finished within seven tenths of a second of each other.

Halliday and Dolby’s fifth place was just five seconds behind the winner.

The next race for the club will be the Spring Regatta at Peterborough on June 4 and 5.
