Powerlifting gold medal for former King’s School pupil who has an eye on the Paralympics

Ex-King’s School student Tommy Smith won a Junior Gold medal at the World Parapowerlifting Cup in Manchester over the weekend.

Tommy said, “The competition went better than I could have imagined. I was pleased with my performance. In the warm-up, I worked my way up to 115kg so I knew I was mentally and physically ready to start the competition. I was confident I had a chance of securing a medal.

“Lockdown has been hard. At times it felt as though there was no longer a purpose. I couldn’t go to the gym and I was training on my own. These competitions gave me the focus I needed. Achieving gold after such a tough year is amazing.” Tommy finished fourth in the men’s category. The 18 year-old will now move on to the British and World Championships and possibly the 2024 Paralympics.
