Peterborough Panthers boss has no regrets as 2021 Premier League plans set to be revealed early in the new year

Peterborough Panthers boss Rob Lyon insists the enforced loss of an entire speedway season hasn’t dampened his enthusiasm for the sport.

The former Great Britain manager created one of the big headlines last winter when he agreed a return to club duty with Panthers after a run of sustained success with East Anglian rivals King’s Lynn earlier in his career.

Sadly the entire Premier League season was wiped out by the pandemic, and now attention has switched to the way in which the sport will re-launch in 2021.

Club bosses are keen to get back on track by Easter, UK Government restrictions permitting of course, but a changing picture caused by limitations on riders competing in the Polish leagues and the uncertainty surrounding Brexit could mean the Premiership has a slightly different look.

Lyon was kept in touch with promoters’ discussions re plans for 2021. Those plans are now set to be revealed on January 7.

Lyon said: “I’m still really looking forward to it (managing Panthers) in the same way I was when I agreed to come back into management this year.

“I did miss it this season of course, but everybody else was in the same position.

“I was quite content to get everything out of the way so that when we do re-start, we do it properly, although obviously if we had gone ahead this year then we would certainly have gone for it.

“I’m as enthusiastic as I was when I decided to come back in, that’s not changed at all, so I can’t wait to finally get going.

“I guess things will look a little different, but the intention is still to keep as many Panthers riders as possible from the original agreement, and what they’re proposing sounds a good idea to me.”
