Peterborough Lido opens for the first time in over a year as lockdown restrictions lifted

Peterborough Lido opened today (March 29) for the first time in over a year after lockdown restrictions were lifted in England.

The popular outdoor swimming pool was closed for the entirety of 2020 and it is believed to be the first time that this had happened since it was built in 1936, 85 years ago.

The lifting of a number of lockdown restrictions in England today, however, allowed the popular attraction to reopen.

Among those is attendance to mark the occasion were Mayor Gul Nawaz, former council leader John Peach and long time Lido user Bill Marriott, complete with his striped bathing suit and straw boater.

Mr Peach, who offered £10,000 of his own money to get The Lido opened last year, was the first to be pushed into the pool to mark the ceremonial opening of the swimming season.

The Lido opened to the public at 7:30am and many members of the public, along with members from City of Peterborough Swimming Club took the opportunity to take their first dip of the year.
