Jacob was an unlucky runner-up in his bid to become an English Junior champion

Gifted young boxer Jacob Hussain fell at the last hurdle in his brave bid to become an English Junior champion.

The Jack Hunt School student, who boxes out of the Pound 4 Pound Club in Walsall, was in action in Finals Weekend in Kettering after winning a regional title and a subsequent quarter-final bout with ease.

And Hussain’s form continued in his semi-final contest against Rion Carter-Subryan from High Wycombe ABC. The city teenager won all three rounds against an erratic fighter to set up a final against two-time National and Tri Nations Champion, Sulayman Elmeged from West Ham ABC.

Hussain, who was born in 2011, boxed well, but the fight became messy with plenty of holding with the local lad penalised far more by the referee much to his corner’s annoyance.

Hussain was still relentless with his attacking and landed some explosive shots, but, crucially, he was deducted a point in the final round.

Even so Hussain looked like he had done enough to win, but controversially the points decision went to Elmeged despite being on the receiving end of double and triple jabs, and a back hand that couldn’t miss. Verdicts cannot be challenged at this level.

Hussain took time out to show gratitude to Pound 4 Pound for believing in him, and to his trainers Omar Shaheen and Shaz Hussain for putting in the endless hours with him. He also thanked Jack Hunt school for supporting him with time off and social media updates. He also thanked the Peterborough Telegraph for covering his multi-title and medal-winning journey.
