Hugely popular Nicholls was pencilled in last year before the pandemic struck, but with plans in place for fans to return to stadia from May 17 – the day after his 42nd birthday - the club are preparing for their return to the track.

He holds the record for British Championship wins with seven and is a successful TV pundit with BTSport on their Grand Prix coverage.

And he says the team labelled ‘Dad’s Army’ by many will rally round teenage ace Jordan Palin who is in a reserve slot under the new Rising Star programme.

Nicholls said: “The Rising Star programme is a great idea for British speedway and although Jordan will have a lot of pressure on his shoulders, we will look after him and make sure he progresses at his own pace.

“We have plenty of old heads in the side again who will be offering him advice in the pits and talking him through all the matches.

“Peterborough is a great club to ride for and hopefully by May we will have fans to see us race.

“It’s hard to believe it’s been 12-months since we attended the last press day.

“It’s been a long wait but I’m ready to get on a bike again and help the club win some meetings.”

Meanwhile club bosses are continuing to work on new dates for those fixtures which were originally planned before the new start date of May 17. Owner Keith Chapman is also working on the airfence behind the scenes and the club are also expected to require stewards for the main stand area.

Plans for the 2021 club programme are already in place with editors Steve and Sarah Miles agreeing to continue alongside publishers Curtis Sport Ltd, who also produce the Peterborough United programme.

Details regarding the existing season ticket holders are also being worked on in terms of what they will get for their money in 2021.
