A 'sad day at the office' as hot young city prospect has to settle for a bronze medal at English Schools event

Hot young prospect Zayne Hussain returned from the English Boxing National Schools Championship with a bronze medal.

But the points defeat for the Jack Hunt School student was seen as controversial with many ringside pundits believing he had done enough to beat Finleigh Lentall of St Paul’s BC in his semi-final in Newcastle.

Competing in the 2012 age category at 44kg, Hussain — who represents Pound 4 Pound Walsall — and Lentall delivered a scrappy bout which might have been tough to judge, but aggression rather than precision won the day.

The first round was the tightest with with Hussain boxing sharply and landing clean scoring shots before being drawn into Lentall’s physical and untidy style.

But in rounds two and three, Hussain showcased excellent movement, sharp footwork, and impressive ring control, repeatedly landing crisp jabs and accurate back hands while avoiding punishment himself.

Despite many spectators feeling Hussain had edged the bout through cleaner, more technical boxing and superior shot selection, the judges awarded the decision to Lentall on points.

The result was heartbreaking for Hussain and his supporters after what many believed was a composed and technically outstanding performance on the national stage.

“A very sad day in the office,” members of the team said afterwards, reflecting on a display they felt deserved more recognition.

Nevertheless, Hussain returns home with a bronze medal and the achievement of being ranked number three in England — a remarkable accomplishment and a proud moment for the local community.

Special recognition goes to Shaz Hussain and Omar Shaheen, who have both played a huge role in Hussain’s development and journey so far as well as the many local businesses who have supported his career.
