And almost 25 years ago Posh owner Peter Boizot was calling on the club’s supporters to to give up their ‘witch hunt’ of first-team manager Barry Fry.

ATHLETICS: Kirsten Rennie of Peterborough AC won the last Icknield Cross Country race of the season at Stevenage to finish overall ladies champion. Clubmate Rachel Stone won the under 15 title.

TABLE TENNIS: Kevin Holton took the men’s singles and doubles titles at the Peterborough Championships.

POSH: Club owner Peter Boizot called on fans to give up their ‘witch hunt’ of manager Barry Fry. “We must rally round the manager rather than attack him”. Boizot said.Posh were five points adrift of safety in Division Two.

ICE HOCKEY: Peterborough Pirates snapped the longest losing streak in British ice hockey history by beating Telford 6-2 in a Premier League game after 36 straight losses. Darren Cotton (2), Jon Cotton, Andy Carter, Stuart Parker and Cassie Dawkins scored.

RUGBY UNION: Borough beat Wellingborough 25-14 to boost hopes of avoiding the drop from Midlands Division One. Rich Martin, John Sismey and Rob Morley scored tries with Chris Jones kicking well.

BILLIARDS: Peterborough pair Mike Russell and Roxton Chapman moved into the last eight of the UK Championships in Norwich.

FOOTBALL: The Mid-Anglia Sunday Morning League was a competitive affair. Referee Dave Baverstock sent off three George Inn players, but they still beat City Arms 7-0! “We played the same team with 11 men two weeks ago and drew 2-2,” said George secretary Anthony Scotney.

HOCKEY: Peterborough Town beat Broxbourne for the first time in 10 years, 1-0 in an East Premier Division clash. Steve Gregory netted the goal.

CRICKET: Old Deaconians beat Audley End from the final ball of the game in a first round National Indoor six-a-side match. Barry Morris (35) top scored.

RUGBY UNION: Borough came from 13-0 down to beat Loughborough University 14-13 in a friendly. Ian Fowler, Kevin Roe and Mick Jones scored Borough’s tries.

ICE HOCKEY: Peterborough Pirates dropped their first points of the Heineken League season by drawing 7-7 at Bournemouth Stags. Tim Peacock hit a hat-trick.

POSH: Goals from Steve Phillips (penalty) and Jackie Gallagher sealed a 2-0 win over Colchester at London Road in a vital play-off battle in Division Four. It was a third Posh win a row for the first time in two years.

ATHLETICS: Mike Rutowski and Paul Grogan crossed the line in first place together in the Thorney Cross Country Championships.

CRICKET: John McDougall claimed wickets in five successive balls as Peterborough beat Nottingham in a National League indoor match.

POSH: Highly rated Aston Villa defender Ian Ross agreed to stay at London Road on loan until the end of the season.

FOOTBALL: A strong team from Wests of Eye won the Peterborough & District newboys five a side title. Squad: Jimmy Smith, Nick Breen, David Snart, Gary Breen, Roy Blake and Marc Clay.

HOCKEY: Joy Worger and Ann Dawson scored the goals as Hunts & Peterborough Ladies beat Warwickshire 2-1.

SQUASH: Promising player Jim Daintith returned from injury to help Eastfield to a 5-0 win over Stamford in the Peterborough League. Steve Gray, Simon Townshend, Andrew McComb and Richard Eames were the city club’s other winners.

POSH: ‘Jolly Jack’s Snacks’, run by former player, Jack Carmichael launched at London Road.

FOOTBALL: Roger Terrell scored twice in the final 10 minutes as Yaxley beat Downham 2-1 in a Peterborough Premier Division match.

ATHLETICS: Over 1,000 runners contested the annual Fred Slater Memorial Cross Country event in Orton. Ray Church (12th) was the best local finisher.

POSH: Noel Cantwell signed striker Billy Woof on loan from Middlesbrough after a 0-0 draw at Crystal Palace.

POSH: Youth team players Colin Garwood, Roger Martin, Clive Adams, Dougie Foard and Barry Thirtle were called up to play for Northants FA against Birmingham FA.

HOCKEY: Peterborough’s Ron Fox scored, but Hunts & Peterborough went down 2-1 at Hertfordshire.

POSH: Ron Cooper was man-of-the-match, but Posh were beaten 1-0 at Workington in a Division Three match.

RUGBY UNION: Borough arrived 20 minutes late for their friendly at Ruislip and went down 12-11 after a predictably sluggish start. McClure scored the Borough try with Barry Vanstone kicking the rest of their points. Vanstone moved onto 89 points for the season. No player from the club had reached 100 points in a season.

TENPIN BOWLING: Marco Cereste picked up four trophies at the Teenage League awards after improving his average to 168.

KARTING: Four year old Tim Parrott, a future champion, was already impressing local karting experts, but he was nine year s away from being able to race competitively.

POSH: Manager Gordon Clark was interested in signing Irish international Charlie Hurley.
