MATCH REPORT: Morris' ladies are history makers

Manager Simon Morris praised a '˜huge team effort' as City of Peterborough won promnotion to the Esat Premier Division for the first time in the club's history yesterday (March 18).

A 1-0 win at Bedford seconds was enough to clinch runners-up behind champions Camnbridge City seconds in East Division One North.

Morris said: “We are very proud to be the first City of Peterborough team in the club’s history to win promotion to the Premier Division.

“Over the last two seasons the ladies have put together a plan to make sure the team is at it fittest, to improve their basic hockey skills and to be committed to playing as a team.

“The mantra being to play simple hockey and to make the ball do the work. It has been a huge effort to stay in this division and now be promoted. The club has put in place a structured approach to their training, has identified a way in which they want to play and brought together a squad of players to make sure the we were promoted.

“The team have been supported by the coaching staff of Gareth Andrew, Jordan Heald and Paul Hillsdon and a group of supporters, some of whom have travelled to every game. It has been a huge team effort.”

Jeorgia Carr scored the only goal of the game at Bedford after just eight minutes. City dominated the game until the latter stages when goalkeeper Eliska Srnka and defender Kate Dixon shone as a single-goal advantage was preserved.

City play their final game of the season against Cambridge University seconds at Bretton Gate next Saturday (March 25). They have won eight and drawn one of their nine fixtures in 2017.
