A statement from Planet Ice, the company that owns the Bretton-based rink, about re-opening the facility suggested competitive ice hockey is not expected to return this year.

The statement read: “As there is currently no clear guidance in relation to spectator sports, Planet Ice are currently not expecting the resumption of league hockey to begin this year. However, this will be reviewed in line with government guidance and engagement with the relevant ice hockey leagues.”

Phantoms insist they are still preparing to return in September, but they will support any decision made by Planet Ice.

A Phantoms spokesman said: “The club remain committed to preparing for the 2020/21 season, regardless of when this may start. We’ll continue to prepare as we would for any other season, as if it is going to begin in September.

“However, we are aware Planet Ice’s statement suggested that hockey may not return to their rinks until the new year at the earliest. If this happens to be the case, the club will support this decision with the safety of everyone being of paramount importance in a situation such as the current COVID-19 pandemic.

“We have also considered the potential non-start of the 2020/21 season. In the event that the 20/21 season doesn’t go ahead, we will refund all fans who have bought season tickets.

“If fans have any further questions, please email us at [email protected] and we will gladly assist you.”
