Disappointment and frustration for Peterborough Phantoms at bottom club

There was disappointment and frustration for Peterborough Phantoms as they went down to defeat at bottom club Telford Tigers in a Wednesday night National League fixture.

The 5-4 defeat was galling enough as Phantoms suffered from a slow start to the contest, but the clity club felt some valiant attempts to get back on terms were thwarted by some erratic officiating. Janne Laakkonen suffered a 10-minute misconduct penalty late in the game after letting his irritation get the better of him.

According to Phantoms social media account: ‘Laakkonen was ejected after shattering his stick in response to a call - seems there’ll be a bench minor after a clipboard went flying too.”

Goals for Finn Howells and Scott McKenzie have Telford a 2-0 lead inside the first five minutes and Danny Rose delivered a short-handed goal in the 15th minute before Phantoms got off the mark within 60 seconds as Duncan Speirs set up Callum Buglass. Things started to look better for Phantoms when Austin Mitchell-King, with help from Scott Robson and Tom Norton, pulled it back to 3-2 in the 26th minute, but McKenzie and David Thomson scored in quick succession for the host.

There was still plenty of time for Phantoms to come back, but the second period ended 5-2 and it wasn’t until 44.08 that Luke Ferrara netted after good work from Laakkonen and Norton. That was the signal for the game to become pretty spicy with regular ‘roughing’ calls.

Phantoms then reduced the arrears to one goal when top scorer Cam Hough netted, but they couldn’t find the goal to take the game into overtime.

Phantoms have a double-header against high-fliers Hull Seahawks this weekend, away on Saturday and at Planet Ice on Sunday (both 5.30pm face-offs).
