The Peterborough dogs will form part of the 18-strong field that will see some of the country’s future stars fight it out across three exciting semi-finals of racing at Fengate.

Peterborough trainers David Pruhs, Richard Devenish and Roger York all have dogs in the semi-finals as they look to take another step towards the £8,500 prize.

The first semi-final (8.42pm) will see the highly regarded Killinan Infanta of the Pruhs kennel challenge Ballymac Santose, representing Devenish. It promises to be a fascinating match-up after both dogs won their respective first round heats convincingly last week.

The two trainers will lock horns again in the third semi-final (9.15pm) when Ballymac McCole takes on Pruhs’s Kooga Klammer.

However, both dogs face the tough task of having to overcome pre-Derby favourite Droopys Trapeze following an impressive win last Wednesday.

The Derby hopes of city trainer York rest with second semi-finalist (8.58pm) Liosgarbh Nearly, who snuck through after finishing third in heat five last week.

The local puppy will be in good company though and may have to pull a sensational run out of the bag to get the better of Newinn Shadow. The Sussex dog stormed to victory in the first round heat and set the fastest time of the evening.

Deputy Head of Racing Operations Debbie Pruhs said: “It was great to have the Puppy Derby back on track last week and there was some top quality racing in front of a good crowd.

“We are all really excited about the semi-finals, and of course looking forward to seeing how the home dogs get on.

“We are already hoping that the Puppy Derby makes an instant return next year and are urging any sponsors to get in touch to make it happen.”
