Ken Stimson student Shirazi met Hamza Din from the very reputable Pinewood Boxing Club in the Home Counties in a 45kg contest.

Boxing a taller boy, Shirazi delivered a high quality display.

He used his speed and footwork to stay just out of range and with his fast hands landed precise scoring shots to the head regularly.

A frustrated Din ran out of ideas as he tried to rush onto Shirazi, but he only got himself into more trouble taking regular head shots from a quick and talented opponent and took a standing eight count in the last round as the city fighter’s success was confirmed.

Doe was eager to go as he took on Leo-Harvey Jenkins from Home Counties club The Ring at 52kg in a battle between two-well schooled fighters.

The first round was tactical with both boys looking for scoring opportunities, but at this high-level there were predictably very few mistakes.

Doe however found openings in the last 30 seconds of the first round and landed some clean shots to the head to put himself in control of the bout.

One round down, Jenkins had to create opportunities, but instead opened himself up allowing Doe to catch him with counter shots to the head without exposing himself.

It was a clinical performance from a boxer with a high IQ.

Shirazi and Doe now join Top Yard clubmates Adam Javed (14), Santino Harris (14) and Claude Gray (16) who had already made their way through to the finals.

To have five fighters at National Finals weekend from the same provincial club is a near unprecedented achievement given the usual dominance of London-based clubs.

It’s certainly a unique achievment for a Peterborough-based club.
