Alex Brown was a commanding centre-back with Hotpoint, Eye United (Peterborough Northern Star) and Perkins and went on to manage Eye United, Perkins, Deeping Sports and King’s Cliffe as well as leading Peterborough Sunday Morning League teams LT Athletic and Royal Oak.
Brown said: “This was such a hard thing to do. I’ve been so lucky to have played with so many talented players over the years.
“But I’ve also been very lucky to play against and manage so many players who could all feature in this squad.
“I decided to select a mixture from my time playing and managing in the Peterborough and District League.
“I have changed this squad so many times and could have easily compiled a squad of 40 players!
“I’m not going to insult anyone by naming subs for the team but I would have loved to put at least two players in every position.”
1.
Goalkeeper GARY HOOKE. “Without doubt the strongest keeper I played with. Gary wasn’t without faults, but his sheer presence was the first thing I noticed from our early days at LT Athletic. In our time at Eye United he was often unbeatable.”
2.
Right-back: CHRIS GEORGE. “‘Georgie’ was a fantastic full back who never shirked responsibility for the team. Tough tackling, clever and good on the ball, Chris was every part a team player who gave little away.”
3.
Left-back: TOM SMITH. “Tom came to me as a young 20-year-old at Kings Cliffe. I didn’t know too much about him, but after a couple of sessions I soon realised he was a natural defender with a good left foot, but more importantly an awareness of the game beyond his years.”
4.
Sweeper: IAN RUDD. “So much is said about ‘Ruddy’s’ ability as a player, that people forget he was an awful trainer, smoked like a chimney and drank like a fish. And this is my biggest compliment to him. To do all that and still be the best player on the park speaks volumes of the man’s talent.”
