Stamford AFC score a stunning upset win to move closer to creating club history in the FA Trophy

A goal from Rob Morgan in the 18th minute secured a 1-0 second round win for the Daniels against a team who play two divisions above them. Harriers, who knocked Posh out of the FA Cup in 2014, are currently second in the National North Division.

Stamford’s win wasn’t without complications as defender Jordan Cooke limped off inside the first 10 minutes and debutant goalkeeper Luke Steele, the former Posh and Manchester United player, was forced out of the game on the hour with a thigh injury.

But Stamford defended superbly to protect teenage ‘keeper Max Peverell. They haven’t lost a game in 90 minutes all season.

Steele, who is unlikely to play for Stamford again as he faces six weeks on the sidelines, said: “Sometimes chasing the win can be painful, but it always feels so bloody good. A great win tonight for Stamford and we fully deserved it. With that character and work ethic you can’t go wrong in any walk of life.”

Stamford have a third round bye as the draw became unbalanced by the withdrawal of Macclesfield Town.

The Daniels have only reachd the fifth round once before, in 2005 when they were beaten by Exeter City.

Peterborough Sports will hope to join them in the fourth round by beating Basford United at the Bee Arena on Saturday (December 19, 3pm).
