Stamford AFC make a statement signing and Bourne Town could face a big-name striker

Stamford AFC have been given a huge signing boost as they attempt a ‘great escape’ from Southern Premier Division Central relegation.

‘The Daniels’ appear to have a hopeless task as they sit bottom of the table 11 points from safety halfway through their season.

But the club announced the signing of powerful centre forward Leon Lobjoit, a man with Northampton Town and Queens Park Rangers on his club CV, at midnight on New Year’s Eve. More recently Lobjoit was top scorer in Stamford’s division when helping Bedford Town to promotion last season.

Delighted Stamford manager Graham Drury told the Stamford Mercury: “It shows we're not giving up and I'm fighting for this football club. It has given me an absolutely massive lift as well. It shows that players still respect me and believe that they can come to this club to make a difference.”

It’s a tough start for Lobjoit as Stamford are at third-placed Quorn on Saturday.

Spalding United are top of the table and would expect to maintain that position by beating Barwell at the Sir Halley Stewart Field tomorrow (3pm kick off). The following Saturday (January 10) it’s the big one as Spalding host second-placed Harborough Town.

Bourne Town could run into a formidable opponent when they travel to Anstey Nomads for a Northern Premier Midlands Division game. Anstey have signed former Derby County, Rangers and Ipswich Town forward Martyn Waghorn, a player who hit a hat-trick against Peterborough United at London Road as recently as August, 2023. Anstey are coached by Waghorn’s former Derby teammate David Nugent.

FC Peterborough have a big chance to consolidate their place in the Thurlow Nunn Division One North play-off places by beating fellow contenders Wroxham Reserves at the Millfield Autoparts Stadium (3pm).
