Skipper Harry leads the way for Deeping Rangers

Captain Harry Barsby's second-half strike proved enough for Deeping Rangers to complete a league and cup double.

He tucked home from close range as Shane Bointon’s right-wing cross broke kindly.

Before collecting the cup on behalf of his team, Barsby was named player of the match.

He had also been on target when Deeping beat Baston on their way to the Division One title in the Peterborough &
District Junior Alliance.

However, Deeping lost to Baston in the League Cup final so Friday night’s game always looked likely to be a tight one.

The majority of players are also friends and team-mates in the Deepings School Year 7 side.

In the first half Barsby, Bob Horne and Finlay Henderson went close for Deeping while Samuel Harris fired wide at the other end.

Henderson had threatened again just before Barsby broke the deadlock but Alfie Fryett, Finley Nottingham and Joseph Cox were all denied by Baston goalkeeper James Roberts.

The only opportunity of an equaliser fell to Oliver Tooth whose shot was held by Max Rigby at the near post.

Deeping manager David Henderson – who has twins Finlay and Harvey in the squad – said: “We lost in the League
Cup final so we got revenge for that.

“I thought the boys were a bit tense in that game so I just told them to go out and enjoy it this time.

“They played good football and created more chances.

“Defensively we were strong and we changed our tactics to counter the way Baston play.

“That’s part of learning as a manager because teams want to beat us and they try to stop us playing.”
