There aren’t many footballers who have bettered Peterborough United star Ivan Toney this season, but Peterborough Sports forward Dion Sembie-Ferris managed it quite comfortably.

The former Colchester United striker is reckoned to be one of the best players ever to appear on the local non-league scene and he’s been key to his club’s remarkable rise up the English football ladder.

Dion has passed 20 goals in each of the last two seasons and his Footballer of the Year success in the Peterborough Telegraph Sports Awards was one of four awards won by Peterborough Sports folk. Manager Jimmy Dean collected two awards with Stephen Cooper collecting the Lifetime Achiever award.

Dione said: “Absolutely delighted for myself and for Jimmy Dean and Stephen Cooper who both thoroughly deserved their awards. I’m overwhelmed by the support from everyone. The staff, players and fans have all made it easy for me since I came to Peterborough Sports. It’s definitely one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.”

The other Footballer of the Year finalist aside from Toney was the first woman from Peterborough to earn a professional football playing contract.

Jodie Bartle is now a Celtic player after starting her career in Yaxley and then with Peterborough Northern Star.
