The city side’s remarkable rise through the ranks continued last night (March 9) as a 2-0 win at Hitchin Town took them to the summit for the first time in the first season of step three football in the club’s history.

An early Dan Lawlor penalty and a late goal from Dion Sembie-Ferris secured the win. Tamworth will return to the top tonight if they get something from their tricky trip to play-off contenders Coalville.

“It’s another milestone for our club to celebrate,” Sports boss Jimmy Dean, a leading contender in the 2019 PT Sports Awards, said. “Getting to the top of a step three table is an incredible achievement considering where we were not so long ago.

“It might not last long. but it’s an achievement no-one can take away from us.

“The lads were outstanding again last night against an excellent team, but then they’ve been outstanding for most of the season.”

Second-placed Stamford can close the gap on Northern Premier League South East Division leaders Leek Town to two points with a win over Sutton Coldfield Town at the Zeeco Stadium tonight (7.45pm).

Both teams are in cracking form winning their last 11 league games between them.
