Rotherham United boss fired after heavy defeat at Peterborough United, new manager already in place

Rotherham United have sacked manager Matt Hamshaw after a heavy 5-0 defeat at Peterborough United on Tuesday.

And Hamshaw has been replaced by former Huddersfield Town manager Lee Clark. Clark was ‘The Terriers’ manager when they lost 3-0 to Posh in the 2011 League One play-off final at Old Trafford. He’s most recently been managing in Saudi Arabia.

‘The Millers’ are six points from safety with nine games to play and Hamshaw was dismissed this morning after vowing he wouldn’t quit in a post-match interview at London Road last night.

It’s the second time a manager has been sacked after a big beating at Posh in recent weeks. Wigan parted company with Ryan Lowe after a 6-1 thrashing at London Road in February.

Rotherham’s plight is not being helped by a mass of injuries. They were missing 14 senior players at the Weston Homes Stadium and it showed.

"There were things coming at me from the crowd tonight and I fully understand that,” Hamshaw told the visiting media. "I don’t want pity or sympathy, but I don’t like hearing I don’t care, because I do. I’m a Rotherham lad and hopefully I am in charge at Lincoln, but if I’m not I will wish the club all the best.

"We were nowhere near good enough tonight. We looked scared and we lacked confidence. It was a shocking first half as we didn’t give ourselves an opportunity against a Peterborough team who have also been lacking in confidence.

"We had a 20-minute spell at the start of the second-half when it looked like we might get back into the game but then we killed ourselves. It’s difficult to defend any player after that as we didn’t lay a glove on them for 70 minutes. We needed more aggression and more tempo, but we made it too easy for them.

"I didn’t see it coming. We gave a very good Bolton side a game on Saturday and we probably should have won, but this was poor.

"I knew it was going to be a tough season, but I didn’t envisage it turning out like it has. We’ve had too many players out for too long. Three lads fell sick on the way down here.

"If we play like this we will go down. If we believe we are down we will be, but I still believe we can get out of it. If we can get our players back we will be okay. We all have to believe though.”
