Stunning comeback by Peterborough United Women as they stretch their lead at the top of a National League table
Peterborough United Women have opened up a four-point lead at the top of Midlands Division One of the National League after a stunning comeback win at Notts County on Sunday.
Posh were 3-0 down with three minutes of the first-half remaining, but recovered to win 4-3 and maintain their impressive unbeaten record. Player-of-the-match Lauren Wilshaw scored twice including the winner four minutes from time. Evie Driscoll-King and Renai Bennett (penalty) also netted.
It looked bleak for the ladies in the first-half as County opened the scoring in the ninth minute after a goalmouth scramble and then took advantage of some hesitant defending to make it 2-0 on 20 minutes. Wilshaw served her notice of intent by smashing a 20 yarder against the crossbar, but the home side benefited from a kind deflection to make it 3-0 on 39 minutes.
Crucially Wilshaw cut inside and fired home from 20 yards two minutes before the break and Posh were a different side in the second-half. Driscoll-King converted Wilshaw’s delicious free-kick in the 57 minutes and it took a couple of smart stops by the home ‘keeper to stop Wilshaw and then Bennett from levelling.

Bennett finally equalised from the penalty spot with 11 minutes to go and, after Driscoll-King had headed a County effort off the line, Wilshaw accepted a short pass from Keir Perkins before firing home from 10 yards to make it seven wins and a draw from eight National League matches.
Posh are in Women’s FA Cup action next Sunday (October) when hosting Burton Albion at Bourne Town FC (2pm kick off).
