'Strong-minded' players sought as Peterborough United boss plots big changes this summer

Peterborough United boss Luke Williams has insisted that big changes are needed at the club after successive disappointing campaigns.

Posh followed up back-to-back play-off semi-final defeats with an 18th placed finish last season and could realistically fall as low as 19th with defeat to Doncaster on the final day.

The side are currently in the midst of a run of just one win in 14 matches are fears are mounting about what next season could hold.

As yet, Williams is yet to sign a player for the club and is therefore working on plans to begin to shape the squad in his own image this summer. The retained list is set to be published on Monday after which Posh will set about their summer business.

Williams has called for big changes to arrest the club’s current slump and is expecting some ‘tough but essential decisions.’

He said: “Things do feel lighter but we are really ashamed to have made such a meal of it.

“I owe the players my gratitude and respect as it has been a very tough season. So many of them have had their first real run at it. I respect them massively.

“It was disappointing how the last 14 games have been but nevertheless, under mounting pressure, they managed to get the job done and that was the aim when I arrived here. We probably overachieved at one point and lost sight of the fact that we still had a lot of work to do to get safe.

“We need to really have a look at what has happened over the last two seasons and try to come up with a plan going forward. We have had two difficult seasons one after another and big changes are needed.

"We have to try and get the right people. We need strong people that can come in day-in, day-out and perform at a high level. They need to be able to overcome setbacks without losing their performance level and attachment to the group.

“We need strong-minded people and they need to be pretty good at football as well.

“We have had a difficult season and we have to try and change things around. Some of those decisions are really, really tough but they are essential.

“There isn’t a single player there that I don’t enjoy working with and don’t want the best for and at the same time, there’s thousands of people that adore this football club and we didn’t have a good season. We must all try to do better next season. Unfortunately, that comes with sacrifice.

“I’m confident that I will give my absolute all. I need to make sure that I am giving everything and that I am incredibly committed to Peterborough.”
