But scoring a goal in your first appearance doesn’t always signal an outstanding career.
Here are the last 20 players to score on their competitive debut for Posh, plus some some other notable first appearance goalscorers.
There were a few who went on to become club greats, but many more who flopped badly...

21. OTHER SCORERS ON DEBUT
The first Football League game in Posh history finished in a 3-0 win over Wrexham in August, 1960. Dennis Emery, Peter McNamee and TERRY BLY could all say they scored on their Football League debuts for Posh, but Emery and McNamee had played in the Midland League for the club. High class Posh players who scored on their Football League debuts for the club include DEREK DOUGAN (1963), DEREK KEVAN (1966), BILLY KELLOCK (1979), ROBBIE COOKE (1980), RAY HANKIN (1983), MICK GOODING (1987), and TONY PHILLISKIRK (1992). Philliskirk is pictured. Posh paid a club record £225,000 to bring striker CARL GRIFFITHS to the club from Portsmouth and he scored on his debut against Walsall in 1996. He only scored one more Football League goal before moving to Leyton Orient. WAYNE ANDREWS scored four goals on his Posh debut in a 5-2 League Two home win over Barnet in 1999. He was on loan from Watford and scored just once more in seven appearances. Striker NEIL GREGORY scored after four minutes of his debut in a top-of-the table League Two clash at Notts County after moving to Posh on loan from Ipswich. He never scored for the club again.
