Savage-ball on full view as Peterborough United grab a last-gasp equaliser at the end of an enthralling contest

One thing is already certain Savage-ball at Peterborough United isn’t going to be dull.

On the surface a 2-2 home draw with Burton Albion is not a great result, but a 94th-minute equaliser – just minutes after the visitors had delivered a goal-of-the-season contender – was greeted like a winner by Posh and their effervescent manager who was cautioned for celebrating on the pitch.

Matt Garbett was the man to poke the ball home in the dying seconds from close range after a great cross from Vernon Masara. Danny Ormerod did well to stretch and divert the cross onto a post. Three substitutes combined to rescue the point which will also please Savage.

Another replacement Gbemi Arubi had looked to have won the game for Burton with a super strike from halfway after Garbett, ironically, had lost possession, but, although the visitors played some quality football at times, it would have been a travesty if Posh had lost. Bass has been beaten like this on a couple of occasions this season, but he instantly redeemed himself with a point-blank stop to thwart Kgaogelo Chauke killing Posh off.

Posh had scored inside two minutes through Owura Edwards, but conceded an equaliser after half an hour when Charlie Webster’s shot was deflected home.

To no-one’s surprise Savage named an unchanged starting line-up. The latest injury for Ben Woods kept him off the substitutes’ bench so Harrison Jones stepped up.

And momentum from the Leicester win clearly carried forward as Posh were ahead after 90 seconds as Edwards tapped home an excellent right wing cross from Harry Leonard.

And they should have scored three in the first-half as Edwards went on to slam another right wing cross from Ethan Williams over the bar after Carl Johnston had toe poked wide after Leonard had played him through.

Posh enjoyed most of the ball, but Burton were a threat on the counter attack. Matt Dennis struck a post on eight minutes with the rebound falling kindly for Posh, but an equaliser arrived on 30 minutes when star visitor Webster was allowed to advance to shooting range although his strike needed a big deflection off Lucca Mendonca to wong foot Bass.

Caylan Vickers was soon shooting wide after popping up unmarked 20 yards from goal and Bass had to tip over a 25 yarder from Dennis. Harry Ashfield tested Corey Addai in the Burton goal before an entertaining first-half drew to a close.

Posh dominated the second-half. It was scrappy at times, but sheer weight of pressure led to chances. Leonard was denied by Addai after pouncing on a Finn Delap error, right-back Johnston was spotted in the penalty area, but only to see a shot blocked. Liam Kelly tested Addai from the rebound.

Posh were the better side, but Burton also threatened. Arubi displayed his menace with an acrobatic effort that travelled just wide and a fine passing move forced Bass to save from Sulyman Krubally.

Initially the Posh substitutions didn’t aid them, a point rammed home by Arubi’s superb strike, but they kept going and carved out one more opportunity which Garbett grabbed.
