Peterborough United’s pursuit of Sammie Szmodics is under threat from Portsmouth

Peterborough United’s League One rivals Portsmouth are understood to have launched a bid to sign Sammie Szmodics.

Szmodics was a star on loan at Posh last season and both co-owner Darragh MacAnthony and manager Darren Ferguson have both refused recently to rule out a return to London Road from Bristol City for the 24 year-old midfielder.

But Pompey’s interest emerged yesterday (September 5) and rumours of a Szmodics departure from Ashton Gate gathered pace when he was left out of City’s squad for their Carabao Cup tie with Exeter City.

After Posh’s Carabao Cup defeat at the hands of Cheltenham, Posh boss Darren Ferguson said: “There is nothing for me to say about Sammie. He was here and did well last season and everyone is aware he’s a player who would be of big interest to us if he was available, but nothing has changed as far as I’m concerned. I didn’t know anything about him not being in Bristol City’s squad.”

Szmodics scored four goals in 10 games for Posh last season. His wages could be a stumbling block for Posh given the new salary cap restrictions.
