Peterborough United Women bow out of one cup, but compete in another next weekend

Peterborough United Women bowed out of the National League Cup with a 4-0 defeat at National League rivals Norwich City on Sunday.

The teams had fought out a tough 1-1 Northern Premier Division draw at PIMS Park a few days earlier, but Posh made many changes to their starting line-up and were eventually well beaten.

Remarkably it was a goalless game until the 43rd minute and yet the hosts went into the interval 3-0 up! A fourth goal arrived four minutes from time.

Before the goal-rush Posh had created the better chances with the Norwich ‘keeper far the busier as she saved well twice from Kira Rai and again from Crista Ganado. Rebecca Mears also went close in the early stages.

The home side opened the scoring from a corner, added a second from a rebound after a fine close-range stop from Posh ‘keeper Neive Corry and made it 3-0 after charging down a clearance kick.

Posh: Corry, Jenkins, Wilshaw, Rai (sub May, 64 mins), Reynolds, Mears (sub Bartlett, 71 mins), Pitt, Steggles (sub Clarke, 71 mins), Osker, Ganado (sub Perkins, 64 mins), Hines (sub Driscoll, 46 mins). Unused subs: Brown, Driscoll-King.

Posh Women travel to lower level Lye Town in a first round FA Cup tie next Sunday (November 8). Lye beat Coton Green 5-0 in a replayed qualifying round tie today. The winners host Northern Premier Division leaders Rugby Borough in the second round on November 15.
