Peterborough United Women are one game away from an unbeaten National League season after success in Sheffield

Peterborough United Women are one game away from an unbeaten National League season.

A 2-0 win at Sheffield on Sunday made it 21 games without a defeat this season for a team who sealed the Midlands Division One title last weekend.

It was a professional performance and victory was secured by goals for Jess Stanford and Jess Rousseau.

Posh were given a guard of honour by their opponents and the match officials before getting down to business with a team that showed eight changes.

Rebecca Mears went closest for Posh in the opening stages with two near-identical opportunities, but her shots travelled the wrong side of the upright.

Posh had to survive a mad goalmouth scramble from a corner, but bodies on the goalline saved the day.

Kira Rai was a constant threat for Posh in wide areas and she teed up Megan Lawlor for a blocked shot before going close herself.

The Posh breakthrough arrived in the 37th minute when Stanford delivered a composed finish after good work from Tara Kirk. Stanford almost scored again, albeit from a cross which hit the woodwork, at the start of the second-half.

Posh survived a couple of defensive scares before Rousseau made the points safe five minutes from time.

Posh finish their season against almost-relegated Stourbridge at PIMS Park next Sunday (April 26, 2pm).

Posh: Corry, Hines, Sharpe, Kirk (sub Rousseau, 81 mins), Lawlor (sub Perkins, 81mins), Stanford (sub Reynolds, 81 mins), Rai (sub Perkins 71 mins), Clarke, James, Osker (sub Pitt, 71 mins), Mears.
