Peterborough United will cope without Ivan Toney says goal-scoring midfielder Jack Taylor

Peterborough United midfielder Jack Taylor insists there are enough goals in the rest of the first-team squad to make light of Ivan Toney’s two-game absence.

Toney is on 25 goals for the season after scoring twice in each of the last two matches against Oxford and Southend, but he now misses tough away games at Fleetwood (February 15) and Burton Albion (February 29) after reaching 10 cautions for the campaign.

But Taylor, who scored his second Posh goal in the 4-0 romp against Southend at the Weston Homes Stadium on Tuesday (February 11), is confident other members of the first-team squad will step up.

“Ivan has scored a lot of goals and we know what it meant once he picked up his yellow card, but we’ve also proved in recent weeks that we have goals right across the team,” Taylor, a £500k recruit from National League Barnet in January, said.

Siriki Dembele is in great form, so is Sammie Szmodics, while Mo Eisa and Ricky-Jade Jones are ready to make the step back up into the team.

“Obviously we will miss Ivan, but we have a strong squad and the mood in the dressing room is so good we will be confident of getting good results in the next two matches.

“There are many different ways to win a game and we will find a way. The only team that can stop us is ourselves.

“The atmosphere within the squad couldn’t be any better. We’re all buzzing and can’t wait for games to come along.

“We had to stay patient against Southend as the conditions were poor. It was very windy and the ball spent a lot of time in the air.

“We needed a kick up the backside at half-time to get us going, but once we scored we won comfortably and I was delighted to be able to help with a goal.

“The manager has told me to try and arrive late into the penalty area when the ball is out wide and luckily it fell right for me.

“I’ve enjoyed a good scoring season. I started as number ‘10’ at Barnet, but we changed formation and I started playing a bit deeper and yet managed to keep scoring.

“Coming from a deep position can make it harder for defenders to pick you up.”

* Toney has claimed 23 of the 64 League One goals scored by Posh this season, but nine other players have notched and all are still at the club apart from Marcus Maddison.

Ricky-Jade Jones and Idris Kanu have also scored for Posh in cup matches this season.
